    Ksar Ghilane

    Oasis on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, with its hot spring and the Roman fort of Tisavar. The last 30 km are on desert track: a suitable vehicle is required.

    Matmata

    Village of troglodyte houses carved into the rock, including the Sidi Driss hotel used as the Lars homestead in Star Wars. A short visit, ideal as a stop on the way south.

    Tataouine

    Gateway to the ksour: fortified granaries of Ouled Soltane and Chenini, Berber villages clinging to the ridge. Allow half a day on site from Djerba.

    Southern Tunisia (Tozeur, Douz, Matmata, Tataouine, Ksar Ghilane) is comfortable to visit from October to April. Distances stay long — Tunis to Tozeur is 440 km, Djerba to Ksar Ghilane 190 km including 30 km of desert track — so the season mainly changes the recommended departure time, not the fare: our prices are fixed all year.
