Why go to the desert in winter?

    • Mild, bright days, far from the summer heat: ideal for walking in the dunes and visiting the oases.
    • Often clear skies: sunsets over Chott el-Jerid and starry nights in the Sahara.
    • Cool desert nights: bring a warm jacket, especially for a night in a desert camp.
    • Date harvest season in Tozeur and Douz, and the International Festival of the Sahara in Douz (usually in December).

Private driver and 4x4: how it works

Your driver picks you up at your hotel and stays with you for the whole tour. Paved roads lead to Tozeur, Nefta, Douz and Matmata by sedan or van. For desert tracks (Ong Jemel / Mos Espa, dunes, Ksar Ghilane) the tour runs by 4x4 with a driver used to the desert.

    Sample itineraries (fully adaptable)

    2. Day 2: Chebika / Tamerza mountain oases, the Star Wars Mos Espa set near Ong Jemel by 4x4, Nefta, then return.

3 days / 2 nights — Deep south and Ksar Ghilane

    Desert tour FAQ

How long do I need for a Tunisian desert tour?

At least 2 days / 1 night for Tozeur, Chott el-Jerid and the Star Wars sets. 3 days / 2 nights lets you add Douz and a desert camp night at Ksar Ghilane without spending your days on the road.

What is the best season for the Tunisian desert?

November to March. Days are mild and skies often clear; nights are cool, especially in a camp. Summer is very hot in the south.

What is included in a private desert tour?

The private vehicle (sedan, van or 4x4 depending on the route), driver, fuel and transfers. Accommodation, meals, site entrance fees and activities (camel ride, quad) are set out in your quote according to your choices.

Do I need a 4x4 for the Tunisian Sahara?

Not for Tozeur, Nefta, Douz or Matmata, which are on paved roads. Yes for tracks: Ong Jemel / Mos Espa, the dunes and the last stretch to Ksar Ghilane (about 30 km of track).

How far is the desert from Tunis and Djerba?

    Tunis → Tozeur: about 440 km (5 h). Tunis → Matmata: about 460 km (5 h 15). Djerba → Matmata: about 125 km (2 h). Djerba → Ksar Ghilane: about 190 km (3 h 15).

Is it safe to travel in the Tunisian desert?

The main southern sites (Tozeur, Douz, Matmata, Ksar Ghilane) welcome travellers all year. With a private driver who knows the roads and tracks, you don't drive yourself or get lost. Also check your country's travel advice before you go.
